Who we are

Living History is run by Living History, LLC ("we" or "us"), which is responsible for the personal information described here. You can reach us at livinghistoryapp@gmail.com or [Mailing address]. This policy explains what we collect when you use livinghistory.app, why, and the choices you have.

What we collect

  • Account details. Your email address, a password if your account has one (stored in hashed form by our authentication provider), and the date you confirmed you're 18 or older and agreed to our terms. When you sign up, we check your email's domain against a public list of disposable email services, and compare a standardized form of your address (for example, ignoring dots in Gmail addresses) with existing accounts, so each person gets only one free allowance.
  • Profile and plan. Your plan, message usage and remaining allowance, message pack balance, any promo code you used, whether and when pictures were turned on for your account, and, on paid plans, the display name figures use to address you.
  • Conversations. The messages you send and the replies you receive pass through our servers so we can generate replies. On the Gold plan we store your conversations and notebook so they're there when you come back. On other plans we don't store conversation text on our servers; it stays in your browser for the current visit and is sent along with each new message so the figure remembers what you've discussed.
  • Payments. Stripe collects and processes your card details; we never see or store your full card number. We keep your Stripe customer ID, subscription status, and renewal date.
  • Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and database providers keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, browser type, and the time of requests, to keep the service running and secure. We don't use IP addresses to count your messages.
  • Stored on your device. Your browser keeps your sign-in session, the avatar you picked, and whether you've confirmed you're 18 or older. You can clear these at any time in your browser settings.

We don't use advertising or ad-tracking cookies, and we don't sell or rent your personal information.

How we use it

  • to run Living History: verifying your email address, signing you in, generating replies, saving Gold conversations and notebooks, and enforcing message allowances;
  • to process payments, renewals, cancellations, and refunds;
  • to send service emails, such as sign-up codes, codes to confirm turning on pictures, receipts, and notices about changes to prices or terms;
  • to keep the service safe, prevent abuse, and meet our legal obligations; and
  • to fix problems and improve the service.

Where the law requires a legal basis for this, we rely on providing the service you asked for, our legitimate interest in keeping it secure and working, your consent where we ask for it, and our legal obligations.

Who we share it with

We share personal information only with service providers that help us run Living History, under agreements that limit how they can use it:

  • Supabase, which provides our database, sign-in, and server functions.
  • Anthropic, which provides the AI models. The text of your conversation, the figure's biography, and the name you've chosen are sent to Anthropic to generate each reply, under Anthropic's commercial terms and privacy policy.
  • Stripe, which processes payments.
  • Netlify, which hosts the website.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale of the business, in which case this policy would continue to apply.

Services your browser contacts

To gather information about a figure, our servers contact Wikidata, Wikipedia, the Nobel Prize, the National Park Service, and the French National Library, and they search Europeana for pictures. Those requests contain only a figure's name or ID or a picture search term, never your details or conversations.

To look up people, pictures, and maps, your browser connects directly to Wikipedia and Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, the Library of Congress, Open Library, and OpenStreetMap, and loads fonts and code libraries from Google Fonts and unpkg. Those services receive your IP address and the search terms involved, under their own privacy policies. We don't send them your account details or conversations.

How long we keep it

  • Account, plan, and saved conversation data: while your account is open. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete this data within 30 days.
  • Payment and transaction records: as long as tax and accounting laws require, even after an account is deleted.
  • Server logs: kept for a limited period by our providers under their own retention schedules.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to stop a particular use of it, by emailing livinghistoryapp@gmail.com. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as the ARCO rights in Mexico, rights under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or rights under US state privacy laws, including the right to receive a copy of your data and to complain to your local data protection authority. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.

You can also cancel a subscription at any time from the account menu, and clear the information stored in your browser through its settings.

Children

Living History is only for adults 18 and over, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account or used the chat, please contact us at livinghistoryapp@gmail.com and we'll delete their information.

Security and transfers

We use encrypted connections and access controls, and limit who can see personal information. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. Our providers may store and process information in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws from where you live; where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.

Changes and contact

If we make significant changes to this policy, we'll tell you by email or in the app before they take effect. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Questions or requests: livinghistoryapp@gmail.com.
