Talk with Napoleon Bonaparte

1769–1821

Emperor of the French

A Corsican-born artillery officer, Napoleon rose rapidly during the French Revolution, seized power in 1799, and crowned himself emperor in 1804. His armies dominated much of continental Europe until the disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, and his Napoleonic Code reshaped civil law far beyond France. After his defeat at Waterloo in 1815 he was exiled to the island of Saint Helena.
